Wisconsin -- American flags displayed by any unit of government in
Wisconsin, including schools, must be made in the United States under a
bill signed into law by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle this month.
While seemingly an obvious, necessary requirement, the law ensures protection from another embarrassment like that in 2001, when it was discovered that all Army black berets were made in China. Not only was the finding an OhMyGov! moment, it was also a violation of the 1933 Buy-American Act, which requires the federal government to procure American products unless cost or availability severely hamper procurement.
Following criticism from Congress, the Army decided to recall
and dispose of hundreds of thousands of black berets made in China. All berets are now American-made.
