Virginia’s Republican attorney general, Robert McDonnell, is
focusing illegal immigration enforcement efforts on sex
offenders. McDonnell, Virginia State Police, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials
have identified 171 people in Virgina who have been convicted of sex crimes. Some
are illegal aliens, others have legal status, but their convictions
violate the conditions of their visas, making them subject
to deportation.
This latest tactical move is an attempt to deport some of the
estimated 12 million illegal immigrants already in
this country without running into serious opposition. Opponents of
mass deportation argue that the task of rounding up and shipping out so
many people would cripple the economy, tear apart families, and be far
too expensive to be practical. But what politician would advocate
against the deportation of illegal immigrants who also committed
