Baltimore Cop Caught on Camera Abusing Harmless Teen

Mid-summer in Baltimore, Maryland, a police officer was caught on tape verbally and physically abusing a 14-year-old skateboarder downtown.  Thanks to massive video distribution on YouTube, the officer was suspended today with pay pending an internal investigation of his actions.

"The police commissioner, the mayor and the top command staff saw the video and are disappointed," said Sterling Clifford, spokesperson for the Baltimore City Police Department.

"I saw the tape. The officer handled the situation so poorly. It is very clear this is unacceptable," said Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon.

Interestingly, when the boy's mother attempted to file a complaint with the officer's supervisor, she could not as he was away on vacation and was told the supervisor would call her back.  Later, she complained to other officers that she never did receive that phone call.

While it may be standard procedure to suspend an officer with pay while he/she is being investigated, this type of "disciplinary action" where a person takes a leave from their job while being paid is called a vacation everywhere else in the world.  And what is there to investigate?  The three minute tape shows everything one needs to see to make an immediate determination of suspended without pay and/or demotion.

Wow. Officer Riviere. Thank you. Without your prompt intervention, those scary 14-yos likely would have continued violating the sanctity of the public space in which they were innocently skateboarding. I'm so relieved you stepped in when you did and communicated (effectively) why those middle-schoolers need to respect the badge you so proudly display atop your burgeoning gut and man ***. That said, just to add in my 2 cents Officer. I really don't have a problem with some kids skateboarding and minding their own business on public property. And since that property is PUBLIC, and since I assuredly pay a great deal more in tax dollars than you, a demoted, electric mini go-cart driving one-stop-away-from-checking-meters PO whose only joy is the vain assertion of dominance over minor children, I have a greater right to that public space than you. And so I choose to exercise my purchase of public land for public use to allow those children to skate in that area.

Is there any kind of vetting that can stop these frustrated little people from working in what should be an important job. This man is a disgrace to himself and his colleagues. The officer in this clip actually commits a battery to the skater. The department should be sued.
