Don't want to lower the drinking age? Fine. Raise the minimum age for paying taxes to 21.

Politically, Obama can't afford to lower the drinking age. Yes, he is strong with the young demographic, but we don't make up a very large portion of the electorate. If he wants to win the election, he need the support of everyone from 18-100, not just 18-20. The drinking age should be lowered, but it won't be until public opinion about it changes. It would be political suicide for any politician in any party, no matter how well established, to suggest lowering the drinking age at this point.

Yes, but the states are refused highway funds if they pick an age lower than 18, and that's a federal law. I don't see how any politician can campaign to 18-20 year olds yet call them irresponsible when it comes to making all adult decisions. I guess we're not responsible in casting a vote for you? Raising the age to 50 would cut down on a lot of highway deaths too, why discriminate against adults?

But Obama can't lower the drinking age anyway! Alcohol laws are set and enforced by the states, not the federal government.
