OhMyGov's analysis of Facebook follower trends for Congress this week revealed that the Republican advantage in social media outreach is strengthening.
The GOP occupied 4 of the top 5 slots in both the Senate and House version of OhMyGov's list tracking the most new Facebook followers.
Sen. John McCain, whose Facebook presence leads all other senators by a considerable margin thanks to his presidential run in 2008, added another 3,043 fans this week. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota added more than 2,600 fans, a nearly 5% gain. Sens. David Vitter (LA) and freshman Scott Brown (MA) also had good showings this week, claiming the #3 and #4 fastest growing spots, with Democrat Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas squeezing in at #5.
Among House members, Republican Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio added 1,844 new fans this week, the most of any Congressman of either party. Political rabble-rousers Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich both enlarged their sizable Facebook fanbase this week, with Ryan Paul (R-WI) and Eric Cantor (R-VA) rising quickly too. The data was compiled from March 12 to 18, 2010.
Will the surge help Republicans defeat the health care bill?
