This year, get ready for a double-shot
Dear Bureaupat,
I've been flooded with information on the flu and H1N1 flu shots from the media and the government. I just want to know if I can get both at the same time. Please advise.
Dear Vaccinated,
Usually, the flu shot is a simple proposition. Just roll up your sleeve and you are set. But this flu season brings both the availability issues and the necessity to receive the H1N1 vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has waffled on the availability and number of H1N1 required shots but currently, the CDC states you can receive both vaccine shots simultaneously. If you are getting the nasal-spray version, then they suggest you separate by at least a week.
However, you may want to follow the lead of the armed services who have been preparing for the possibility of mission impact due to a pandemic influenza.
The military is encouraging all its servicemembers first to do all they can to stay healthy, as our nation's combat readiness depends on healthy military members. Military commanders urge servicemembers to get their annual seasonal flu vaccines as soon as possible so that they can develop immunity to seasonal flu.
Since the H1N1 vaccine will be given at a separate time (and you must be healthy to receive that shot), getting your seasonal flu shot or mist early will allow you to get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
Additionally, following general flu prevention measures like getting adequate rest, washing your hands frequently, covering your cough and staying home if you have a fever will help prevent the spread of the virus.
For more information concerning the H1N1 virus, visit the Centers for Disease Control website.
Yours in Gov,
Bureaupat
