The taxman on TV
The Internal Revenue Service is thinking outside of its boxy
forms and text-heavy website to embrace the YouTube and iTunes generation.
Creating its own YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/irsvideos, the IRS
has a handful of videos with useful information about the administration’s economic
recovery effort as well as a series of "tax tips."
“Find out how you can get all the tax breaks you deserve and
are entitled to!” reads the promo for the tax tips section. The
videos are narrated by IRS employees and kept mostly under a minute in
length — smart thinking, since attention spans are short, especially when it
comes to taxes. The IRS has also posted six podcasts on iTunes which talk about
a lot of the same information.
The IRS first joined YouTube this past April, and currently
has 250 subscribers and just over 25,000 views. While not much by YouTube
standards — a belly-dancing baby has snagged 2.3 million views and counting,
for example — it is nevertheless a step in the right direction.
Now, a belly dancing baby talking about tax deductions, that
would get quite a few hits.
