Congressman's speech outburst leads to website outage

Web visitors yell "You crash!"

By Andrew B. Einhorn Sep 10 2009, 10:10 AM

Outages all morning

Outages all morning

The stench of partisan politics has returned to the Capitol, as noticed from the outbursts from members of Congress last night during President Obama's healthcare speech. In a move reminiscent of the British Parliament, where members often boo the speaker if they disagree, South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted “You lie!“ after Obama mentioned that illegal immigrants will not receive healthcare benefits under the proposed healthcare bill in Congress.

In a sign of how much Rep. Wilson's outburst has inflamed the political sphere, the Congressman's website crashed this morning from the influx of visitors looking to see just who the irreverent not-so-gentleman from South Carolina is and what he believes. A message on the website reads "Due to exceptionally high traffic, this site is temporarily unavailable." Official websites of House members are maintained by government IT staff.

Bowing to political pressure from both sides of the aisle, Wilson later apologized for his outburst.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the healthcare bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

Lawmakers are calling on Wilson to apologize on the House floor today as well. Sources state that Wilson called the White House late last night to personally apologize and ended up speaking with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, another man not known for keeping his fiery nature in check.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Wilson's outburst has already prompted a surge of $100,000 in campaign contributions to his democratic competitor, Rob Miller, an Iraq War veteran who unsuccessfully challenged Wilson in 2008.

So, Mr Einhorn...what about the Dumbocrats who booed and hissed at President Bush during speeches? Your blatant partisanship is showing.

It isn't partisanship to report the facts. The fact is the act was disrepectful. Had a dem yelled, the story would be reported in the same way. This wasn't a story about Bush or Reagan or Nixon, this was about Obama. The only partisan one is you. THIS right here is why our country is divided...because people make issues when there are none to be made.

What about them? Yes, they happened 4 years ago and were also a disgusting display of politics. That's one reason why I said partisan politics had returned to DC yet again. But this was a short news blip, not an editorial or in-depth report about the history of booing during speeches -- that would be interesting to research though. So I tried to stick to the events and the facts as they did in fact occur.
