Police Taser Incident Leaves Crowd Watching, Gasping

No we're not talking about Daniel Radcliffe

By Caren Sachs May 02 2009, 10:14 AM

Hang on to your pants, because here we go again: another video surfacing on the internet of a cop tasing a dude. This time though, the dude is naked, and instead of fighting the cops and pleading, “Don’t tase me, bro,” the man calmly tries to convince the cops that being naked is beautiful.

An unknown man dubbed “The Naked Wizard” was tased several times in front of a stunned crowd during last month’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a 3 day concert in Indio, Calif., known as the Woodstock of the 21st century.

The video (which is not safe for work viewing) shows cops begging the man to get dressed. When he fails to comply, the cops douse him with water and begin tasing him, much to the dismay and horror of a growing number of angry on-lookers.

Though the crowd can be heard screaming and cursing at the cops to cease the tasing, not one of them steps in to help the naked guy. Their only threat is that most of them are recording the incident on their cell phones, and they intend to “show the whole world,” the footage, as one man yells.

From the video, the naked man clearly remains calm throughout the ordeal. So why did two big cops feel the need to continuously tase one man, much less tase him at all? Why couldn’t they have just cuffed him and called it a day?

It is a fact that many victims of Taser gun abuse by cops have sued the officers in court and won their cases, but only after the fact. Why do people have to wait until it’s too late to take action against misuse of power and weaponry by officers of the law?

Should there be a law allowing bystanders to take action if they feel a police officer is abusing their power? Should cops be allowed to use Taser guns at all? Share your thoughts with us.

This isn't abuse of power at all, they asked the drunk or high idiot to put his clothes on, there are laws against being nude in public, they were just talking to him and he refused, then they try to put him under arrest, he resisted and they tasered him. Seems perfectly logical to me...

The naked douche deserved it. you know how not to get tased? follow basic civilized laws then don't resist arrest when you flaunt those laws. I for one am glad people like this aren't allowed to prance around in their birthday suits

Wow!

This seems abusive to me. I wonder why such strong over reaction by the police. I sure wasn't about penis envy. As for the crowd, when you see police behaving badly who are you going to call?

While I agree he was SLIGHTLY resisting arrest, it was excessive......very excessive.

There was no need to taser him over and over (after dousing him with water).

I agree in police doing their jobs....but this was not. It was clearly abuse of power, which cops get hard on's over.

There are plenty of police officers who do their jobs like they are supposed to, but there are just as many who love to use any excuse to use their weapons.......hopefully, this guy can sue. Many have (and won).

Who watches the watchers?  Thank goodness for technology, where we can record things like this.........

It may seem bad, but the naked fan was being extremely disrespectful to the police, who had asked him several times to put his clothes on. He was also being disrupted, and was drunk, so he would not listen to anyone. If the police had not done something, other fans may have seen that there was no law enforcement there and could have possibly done worse things like rushing the stage, hurting each other or more.

The jacka** should have put his clothes on – it is extremely offensive that he was running around like that anyway. He got what he deserved – he is lucky they didn’t beat him with a baton!

So lets say after a tasing a cop admits that he could have done differently, but the victum suffers reprecussions following the taser. What will be the correction for the officer who caused physical harm to the victum? May just a reprimand? Who knows but what this same cop may do harm again for lack of judgement? How do you think this cop would feel if at some later date someone tasered him in retalliation? A cop should have to be in communication with his Chief before making a decision to use the taser which is supposedly not life threatening. However there are exceptions that have already been observed.
