In his first months in office, President Barack Obama has made notable strides toward government openness and transparency, and not just the headline grabbing moves like using YouTube or holding a virtual town hall meeting. Recently he called for the creation of an Open Government Directive that would require agencies to reveal their inner workings and make their data public. Now, from the General Services Administration, comes a monster 40-page newsletter that spells out findings and ideas about the open government initiative. The doc was put out by GSA's Office of Citizen Services and Communications.
"By allowing citizens to 'see through' its workings and investigate whether or not their leaders and organizations have met their expectations, the government brings the public into its inner circles and empowers citizens to contribute to decision-making," the report's intro states. The hope is that as citizens gain knowledge and understanding, their trust in government begins to grow.
Also discussed in the newsletter are subjects such as technology as a game changer, citizen views on transparency, shedding light on corruption, and how the government serves citizens.
