Postal worker stole nearly $700k in stamps, feds say

Why deal with long lines, surly service when you can just grab a stack from the back

By OhMyGov! Apr 20 2009, 05:05 AM

A U.S. Postal Service window clerk and his associate were nabbed in an undercover bust for pocketing over a half million dollars in stamps, and reselling them on eBay, according to a federal indictment.

The Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office said Elkridge postal clerk Marvin Foster, 54, and Kyle Mathias, 23, schemed to steal $682,800 in stamps over the period from June 2008 to March 2009. That's one hell of a stamp collection!

Prosecutors said someone tipped off the inspector general to a pattern of thefts at the Elkridge and Hanover post offices. After a postal inspector found the contraband stamps for sale on eBay and traced them to Mathias, Foster was caught on a hidden camera lifting "bricks" of 2,000 stamps from a post office stockroom. Next step, if convicted, will be a special delivery to the Big House.

 A bunch of philatelists, apparently
