While Detroit auto makers continue pumping out SUV's and begging Congress for survival cash, the Chinese are planning to unveil their new fleet of battery-powered, 24-person buses in June, UPI reports.
The new buses can cover 188 miles on one charge at a top speed of 62mph and
recharge in 20 minutes.
A Chinese researcher at the Lithium-ion Battery
Material S&T Innovation Center, said the buses' long battery is attributed to the lithium-ion batteries it uses, instead of the lead acid cell batteries widely used in
conventional electric cars that only can travel about 65-95 miles and
take longer to recharge.
Each of the 70 buses being built costs about $73,000 and was constructed by the Tongkun New Energy Technologies Co. and FAW Bus and Coach Co.
Perhaps Congress can direct some of the stimulus money to place orders for a few thousand of these buses to be built here the U.S. for city transit, airport shuttles, or at the very least, Vegas parties?
