To celebrate Lincoln's 200th birthday in style, the U.S. Mint is releasing four new pennies at three-month intervals throughout the year. The first went into circulation last week, so be on the lookout for it over the next few weeks as you dig into your pockets for spare change.
The bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln will be honored in 2009 on four new pennies depicting the life of the nation's 16th president. Authorized by Public Law 109-145. The four new designs celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth as well as the 100th anniversary of the production of the Lincoln cent (penny):
The first shows his childhood in Kentucky.
The second is school-age years in Indiana.
The third, his professional life in the Senate in Illinois.
And the fourth, his presidency in D.C.
The first redesigned penny will be put into circulation on February 12, 2009. These designs represent the first change in the Lincoln cent in half a century.

Blah. Tired of dead presidents. US coins used to be beautiful, now they're all fugly. And even among all the old dead white men, Lincoln was fuglier than others. If you had any idea just how good the old ones looked, you'd be out there protesting this. We shouldn't venerate people anyone, only principles.

US Dollars used to be fairly good looking as well... That was before this federal reserve note monopoly money though.
U.S. Mint May 20, 2009 1:12 AM
Money is a work of art, science and technology honed from generation to generation. The U.S. Mint is the organization responsible for printing and coining money. There are U.S. Mint production facilities in several locations across the country, and they have a new product to put out. The new thing they are rolling out is a new penny series. The new pennies, which will take more in installment loans to make than they are worth, feature several scenes of Abraham Lincoln (since we're on a bit of a Lincoln kick these days) from childhood, his tenure in the Senate, and during the construction of the capitol building. It's a noble effort, but with the cost of the new equipment and design, one wonders if the U.S. Mint will need debt relief from coining pennies.
