Just because the election is over does not mean that people in the federal government are finished campaigning.
NASA Administrator Mike Griffin, despite what his press secretary told the Associated Press, seems to be running a one-man national campaign to keep his job once the Obama administration takes over in two weeks.
The press secretary says that a campaign is not being run, but looking over Griffin's actions from the past few months, it's kind of obvious that the NASA administrator is trying to influence the President-Elect.
Just before November 4, Griffin sent a letter to the then-Illinois senator thanking him for voting to allow NASA's use of Russian spaceships. Saying that he was "deeply grateful to you, personally, for your leadership," Griffin did not send any such type of letter to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), who introduced the bill, or any of the other senators that voted to pass it. And considering that the bill was agreed upon by unanimous consent, Griffin's action was more than a little strange.
But Griffin has done more than send a thank-you note to try and secure his position in the Obama administration. Last week NASA mailed out priority packages, costing $6.75 apiece, of a new agency book interestingly titled "Leadership in Space: Selected Speeches of NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, May 2005-October 2008."
And there's more! Launched by a former NASA official, there is now a Web site with a petition people can sign to try and convince Obama to not give Griffin's job away. And Griffin's wife, Rebecca, has hit the "campaign trail" also, e-mailing friends and family members to sign it.
Not a campaign? You decide.
