It's official! "Inauguration Day Area" employees get two paid holidays in January

It's great being a recession-proof federal employee in the DC metro area!

By Richard Hartman Jan 06 2009, 05:48 AM

Federal employees in the immediate Washington, DC, area will have two holidays in January 2009: the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Monday, January 19) and Inauguration Day (Tuesday, January 20).  The two holidays fall within the same pay period, which begins on January 18 and ends on January 31, 2009. Special pay and leave procedures will be in effect.

Federal employees in the Washington, DC area get an extra holiday on the day a President is inaugurated (January 20 following a Presidential election). Employees are entitled to this holiday if they are employed in:

  1. The District of Columbia;
  2. Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland;
  3. Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia; and
  4. The cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.

The "Inauguration Day holiday" applies to an employee under a telework agreement if the employee is scheduled to telework on Inauguration Day at a location within the Inauguration Day area, regardless of the location of the employee's official worksite.

There are also provisions for employees on Flex and compressed work schedules.

One would logically conclude the extended holiday was a result of anticipated record crowds of 1.5 million to 3 million people for Barack Obama's Inauguration Day ceremonies, but according to the  Office of Personnel and Management memorandum signed by acting Director Michael Hager "Inauguration Day" is a traditional holiday for local federal employees, regardless of expected attendance levels.

Make that three paid holidays in January. OPM lists Jan. 1 as a paid federal holiday.

Yes, it must be nice to have a recession proof job. Maybe you should remember that most americans do not work for the federal government and do not have recession or depression proof jobs. And Mr. Hartman maybe you should remember that it is our federal governments fault that our economy is in the position it's in. In conclusion you might also think that even you can be fired.
