$1 million Wisconsin web site features photo of Minnesota

By Jaime L. Hartman Dec 30 2008, 11:01 AM

The new Wisconsin Government Accountability Board web site features a beautiful image of the Wisconsin capitol dome and a pretty skyline – of a city in Minnesota.

The site is part of a state system for tracking campaign fund raising and spending. It was used by some candidates this fall as part of a pilot program but will be required for all beginning in January. Candidates have already complained about glitches with the site that have caused delays, but the artistic license taken with the image is getting more widespread attention.

State Senator Jeff Pale, who represents South Milwaukee, noticed the problem and thought it odd. “I don’t think a lot of Minnesota legislators care about our Government Accountability Board, but who knows?” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The company who is receiving about $1 million to develop the site said they are using the image of the Minneapolis skyline as a placeholder while it searches for a copyright-free image of Madison’s skyline.

The Connecticut-based PCC Technology Group was apologetic about the situation and expected to have it fixed by early January. Maybe someone in Wisconsin can step outside and send them a snapshot. As another Badger state politico said, “The state doesn’t need to outsource their skyline.”

Wisconsin also has a new 511 system for road conditions.   While in Elsworth, Wisconsin and driving from there to Rhinelander and south to Mosinee all we could get was the Minnesota system.   It seems to work now, or maybe that is just becuase we are back in Madison.

Update: The contractor has fixed its embarrassing mistake. The website now features a picture of the actual Madison, Wis. skyline. All traces of Minnesota appear to be removed.
