In our weekly poll, OhMyGov! asked readers what actions they're taking as a result of the nation's financial crisis. The surprising results suggest once again that federal employment really is recession proof - and our readers, many of whom are federal workers, know it!
At a time when an estimated 10.3 million people across the nation are unemployed and countless more workers are concerned about impending layoffs or company closings, the biggest worry and leading action taken by our readers was terminating their gym membership, followed by giving up frills like HBO and being relegated to fine dining at McDonalds.
Other readers are working hard to get a cushy federal job and/or working hard to ensure they keep their existing federal job.
Our more conservative readers - a smaller slice of respondents - are delaying retirement, taking on second jobs and hiding their money in the safest venue these days, under their pillow.
Some of our readers think things are so bad they that they are looking to move someplace cheaper...can you say Mexico?
Other provided their own answers:
- Delaying buying a new car
- I'm begging the government for billions - and they're giving it to me
- I take enough anti-depressants that it doesn't concern me
- I have a government job, so I'm not affected
The chart below shows the full breakdown of the poll results.
