Operation Understanding DC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has pioneered a leadership
program for African American and Jewish high school students in the greater metropolitan Washington
DC area. Our mission is to build a generation of African American and Jewish community leaders who
promote respect, understanding and cooperation while working to eradicate racism, anti-Semitism and all

This is a full time position. The Program Director works with and reports to the Executive Director and is
aided by a volunteer Program Committee. The qualified candidate will possess exceptional facilitator
skills, experience promoting multicultural ideals and facilitating leadership development, be interested in
and engaging to high school students, possess excellent communication skills, have a background in or a
willingness and aptitude to learn the histories of peoples of Black and Jewish descent and the American
Civil Rights Movement. An ideal candidate will combine the above with being a team player and a self-
motivator.
Program Implementation
- Design, staff and execute the curriculum of all student programs, retreats and special events
- Recruit, brief and oversee volunteer speakers for the programs
- Evaluate the effectiveness of programs
- Work with a program development committee in order to complete these goals
- Design, plan and lead the summer journey
- Schedule, coordinate and oversee student speeches, workshops, etc.
- Record a Program Journal or Manual
- Help plan and supervise annual graduation
- Implement program within the confines of the budget as interpreted by the Executive Director
- Plan, coordinate and implement parent program initiatives
Recruitment & Selection
- Prepare and disseminate student recruitment information
- Find appropriate and cost-effective ways to advertise the program
- Coordinate recruitment sessions with local student organizations
- Manage receipt of applications and determine eligibility of applications
- Manage volunteers to assist in these efforts
- Train volunteers to conduct interviews
- Coordinate the logistics of the interview weekend
- Orientation new students and provide introduction of the OUDC program and family
Student Relations
- Enforce student acceptance of, and monitor students’ progress in fulfilling, the “agreement”
- Coordinate students performing volunteer office hours
- Provide consistent, effective policies and rules for student conduct
- Provide discipline when students run afoul of stated policies
- Provide mentoring for all students
Administration/Management
- Produce and disseminate “paper” notices of events for students at least one week prior to the
event (10 days is preferable)
- Work collegially with ED to ensure professional publication and correspondence
- Maintain strict budgetary constraints
- Inform the Board of program developments as requested
Salary range: $32,000-37,000 per year, depending upon experience. Excellent health benefits. To apply,
