OhMyGov! Poll results: Your top issues going into 2009

By Richard Hartman Nov 21 2008, 08:13 AM

In our weekly poll, OhMyGov! asked readers what their top issue was going into 2009. While the responses were mixed, the largest percent of our readers (21 percent) said, "It's the economy, stupid!" in reference to a sign James Carville hung in the 1992 campaign headquarters of candidate Bill Clinton.

Not too far behind were energy independence (12 percent) and ending/winning wars (11 percent). The lagging concerns included Social Security (6 percent); a 4-way tie with America's Reputation, Environmental Protection, Federal Spending, and Terrorism at (5 percent); and lastly Supreme Court Justice Picks (3 percent). This represents a significant shift from the mood of the country since the September 11 attacks and the 2004 and 2006 elections.

Some of our not so serious readers are concerned about an alien invasion.  The full results of the poll are as follows:

To help relieve or heighten your concerns, OhMyGov! wants to give you a glimpse of 2009 from the perspective of our newly elected Commander and Chief and Chief Executive, President-elect Obama.

Economy

As our readers noted, our country faces its most serious economic crisis since the great depression, President-elect Obama states he will revitalize the economy by:

  • Immediate action to create good jobs in America
  • Immediate relief for struggling families
  • Direct, immediate assistance for homeowners, not a bailout for irresponsible mortgage lenders
  • A rapid, aggressive response to the financial crisis

Energy Independence

The energy challenges our country faces are severe. President-elect Obama plans to invest in alternative and renewable energy, end our addiction to foreign oil, address the global climate crisis and create millions of new jobs. Specifically, the incoming administration's stated plan will:

  • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

Ending/Winning Wars

President-elect Obama states he will responsibly end the war in Iraq so that we can renew our military strength, dedicate more resources to the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, and invest in our economy at home. The Obama plan will help us succeed in Iraq by transitioning to Iraqi control of their country.  He also states he will invest in a 21st century military to maintain our conventional advantage while increasing our capacity to defeat the threats of tomorrow and ensure our troops have the training, equipment and support that they need when they are deployed.
