Four agencies receive Presidential awards for energy conservation

By OhMyGov! Oct 24 2008, 10:30 AM

The White House honored four agencies yesterday for energy conservation programs that are saving the government more than $72 million annually and enough energy to power 32,000 homes each year, Federal Times reported.

The four winning projects were:

  • The Housing and Urban Development Department's Office of Public and Indian Housing, which used energy performance contracting to spur energy conservation investments by 35 percent in over 201,800 public housing units.
  • Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California, which reduced its energy use by 9.5 percent at a savings of $1.4 million.
  • National Archives and Records Administration, which reduced its energy use by 6 percent via an energy savings performance contract at no upfront cost to the agency.
  • General Services Administration's Pacific Rim Region, which completed energy projects in 24 buildings, built a modular alternative generation plant and a 274-kilowatt photovoltaic system, and is constructing a 740 megawatt solar power station.
