The number of daily visits to the federal government’s jobs web site, USAjobs.gov, has increased by 45% over the past six months, according to Computerworld magazine. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) reports that the number of visits is now approximately 500,000 per day. Six months ago, that number was just 345,000.
According to OPM, about 60,000 job searches are conducted on the site per minute. Job seekers are wise to turn to the site that lists an average of 45,000 – 55,000 at any time. Jobs range from low-level occupations with few required skills to upper management positions requiring years of experience and specific certifications.
OPM doesn’t want to speculate on the reasons for the growth of traffic on the site, but the dismal economy may be playing a role. As more workers are being laid off and watch their investments tank, many are turning to so-called “recession proof” jobs in government. The government and the taxpayer should benefit from this turn as the pool of applicants for open positions ought to be bigger and include more of the best and brightest than during economic boom times.
