Navy IT employee steals 19,000 items

By Andrew B. Einhorn Oct 02 2008, 09:32 AM

If your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is looking down these days, don't try to bolster it through a five-finger discount. That's what a former computer systems administrator for the Navy learned yesterday after pleading guilty to stealing close to 19,000 pieces of computer and office equipment.

According to prosecutors, Victor Papagno, 40, an IT employee at the Naval Research Laboratory in southwest Washington, lifted $120,000 worth of government property between between 1997 and August 2007. Navy criminal investigators recovered thousands of software programs and over 100 personal computers from Papagno's home in Hughesville, MD.

Papagano will likely face a year to 18 months in prison for the theft. His sentencing is scheduled for December 22.
