IRS Brings Tax-Processing Work Back In-House

Good news for government, bad news for tax filers

Federal workers who don't like it when the government contracts jobs out to private industry can celebrate a victory this week -- the Internal Revenue Service announced it is resuming management of taxpayer files at seven regional submission processing centers.

The switch takes effect Oct. 1. In the coming months, the IRS says, it plans to hire 700 employees at processing centers in Andover, Mass.; Atlanta; Austin; Covington, Ky.; Fresno, Calif.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Ogden, Utah.
