Illegal immigrants given option to deport themselves

By Andrew B. Einhorn Jul 31 2008, 09:29 AM

In a policy shift which clearly demonstrates our failed immigration policies and inability to comprehensively address the issue, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials urged illegal immigrants to turn themselves into authorities under a pilot program planned for five U.S. cities next month.

The self-deportation program, called "Operation Scheduled Departure," allows illegal immigrants to deport themselves instead of being deported.  Why would they do this?  The wonderful perks of self-deportation of course!  Those being 1) a chance to avoid the risk of being caught and jailed - which they already took coming here, and 2) up to 90 days to put their affairs in order, and in some cases, leave with family members - which they could do anytime on their own terms.

Get a van ready, because that's all the transportation the government will need to transport those who self-elect deportation out of the country.

I guess we can say we gave them the chance to leave peacefully when we have to personally escort every last one of them home - AT GUNPOINT!

Granted, most people here illegally came legally and just overstayed their visas. BUT, for the people who crawled through barbed wire and fences, swam miles in the ocean, crawled through rat infested tunnels and hid for 3 days in the 100 degree trunk of a car, what on EARTH makes ICE think they'll just turn themselves in and go? If they were that desperate to be here, they're hardly going to pack up and turn around. This is up there with ICE's most wasteful use of resources yet.

A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants, hospital officials said. In 2004, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies but ended the year with a $7.9 million surplus in obstetrics. The positive bottom line resulted from a hefty infusion of Medicaid funds, about $34.5 million, to cover the delivery costs for the undocumented women. Dallas County taxpayers also kicked in $31.3 million, or about 40 percent of the total obstetrics costs, and the federal government paid an additional $9.5 million to make up for the hospital's high percentage of patients on Medicaid, the state-federal insurance program for the poor. - The Dallas Morning News. There are 254 counties in the state of Texas.
