Scientists looking to get Congressmen on the record

By Tarkan Rosenberg Jun 19 2008, 04:33 PM

The nonprofit action group Scientists and Engineers for America (SEA), along with 15 other scientific and engineering societies, launched a nation-wide campaign to enlist voters in helping to distribute an informational questionnaire to all current congressional candidates today.

The questionnaire seeks to query the candidates about their position on each of the following issues: scientific innovation, climate change, energy, science education, water policy, research investment and health care.

Thus far, Reps. Danny Davis and Steve Cox, both from Illinois, have submitted replies.

Through the campaign, SEA hopes to encourage voters to write to their local representatives and candidates in order to expand participation and support for the advancement of scientific initiatives.

Founded in 2006, SEA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan science advocacy group that encourages increased government involvement with the scientific community and with issues relating to science. The organization also runs a scientific wiki site, the Science, Health and Related Policies (SHARP) network, that tracks candidate positions on scientific issues.

To participate in SEA's action plan, and to find information about how to approach your local congressional candidate, visit SEA's Action Fund website.
