Amazon.com Inc. is suing the state
of New York to block a new law that requires out-of-state internet
retailers to collect sales taxes if they have a physical presence in
the state.
Attorneys for the Seattle online giant (NASDAQ: AMZN) filed the
lawsuit in New York City on April 25 challenging the constitutionality
of the law, which was enacted as part of the 2008-2009 state budget.
The state estimates the tax will generate $50 million this fiscal year
and $73 million in 2009-2010.
