Wikileaks Ordered to Shut Down

By Andrew B. Einhorn Feb 19 2008, 10:38 AM

Wikileaks.org, a website that allows whistle-blowers to post documents about the government and corporations anonymously, was cut off from the internet in the U.S. following a California court ruling.  The ruling followed a lawsuit against the site by a Swiss bank after "several hundred" documents about its offshore activities were posted on the site.  More on this story

Wikileaks' mission is to assist those unable to risk their jobs by whistle-blowing publicly by providing a confidential place for them to release documents to the press.  Over 1.2 million documents had been posted on the Australian website prior to the lawsuit.

Try to access the website and you'll receive the following message:

It's conceivable the site will be brought back online once the lawsuit ends.  But the precedent has been set for the U.S. Government to decide what can and cannot be leaked online.  It's a slippery slope from here that only the Chinese and Arab governments have dared to go down until today.  That should be reason enough to alter our policy in the opposite direction.
