Congratulations Alabama, you now hold the title for the most sexually repressed state. While many viewed anti-sodomy laws that exist in the state as an acceptable, albeit unenforceable attack on the homosexual community, the ban on sex toys reaches a new level of absurdity in regulatory intrusiveness. How is it that voters in the red state are willing to accept a law limiting what consenting adults can use in the privacy of their own homes?
The sex toy ban went into effect in 1998 and shortlty thereafter, a sex toy shop filed a lawsuit refuting the constitutionality of the law. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the
constitutional challenge to the 1998 state law banning these handy helpers. The decision leaves citizens of Alabama to their own devices.
Sex toy store owners can take some comfort in an important exemption to the law. If the toys are used for “bona fide medical” purposes, they may be purchased. Sex toy shops now
require customers to sign an agreement upon purchasing items saying they will use the toys for legal purposes only, The Birmingham News
reports. What's next Alabama? Banning sex for reasons unrelated to procreation?
