In a recent article from Government Executive, presidential hopefuls
expressed their ideas about the federal workforce.
- Clinton vowed to cut 500,000 federal contractors from the federal payroll
- Giuliani promised to reduce the workforce 20% through retirement and attrition
- Edwards would root out waste and mismanagement
- Romney would conduct a top down review and eliminate waste and inefficiency
- Thompson says our civil service system
is antiquated
- McCain has a comprehensive plan to boost fed pay and speed up firings
Not
that the federal workforce is a topic of high interest on the campaign
trail, but you’d think the candidates would be more insightful on how
they would shape the workforce they will potentially oversee. The mantras “doing
more with less”, "reducing waste", and the observation that the system is
antiquated are all nice rhetoric, but tell us why, what, and how to improve things. As a constituency of over 3 million members, our vote does and
will count.
So who are you voting for? From an employee standpoint, McCain seems to offer me the best chance of retaining my job and a raise...but his chances seems slim at present.
