Mission:
The United States Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency and part of the United States Department of Homeland Security. Sworn members are divided among the Special Agents and the Uniformed Division. The Secret Service's initial responsibility was to investigate crimes related to the Treasury, and until March 1, 2003, it was a branch of the Treasury. The US Secret Service has two distinct areas of responsibility. Treasury roles cover the prevention and investigation of counterfeiting and fraud. Protective roles include ensuring the safety of current and former national leaders and their families, presidential candidates, foreign embassies (per an agreement with the US State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) Office of Foreign Missions (OFM)), etc. Much of its jurisdiction has since been taken over by agencies such as the FBI, ATF, and IRS, but the Secret Service has evolved into the United States' first domestic intelligence and counter-intelligence agency.
